
I was first exposed to yoga in the mid ninety’s through my training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the Gracie family. Watching
Rickson Gracie’s Yoga and pranayama practice in Choke had a huge Impact, and I knew I needed to learn as much as possible about this practice.
Through Rickson I met Cameron Shayne who trained at Rickson’s Academy in California. Cameron was just starting his Yoga & Mobility system called Budokon. I went to Kripalu to meet and train with Cameron and we became close friends. I eventually became a Budokon Yoga instructor and started incorporating Yoga into my BJJ Classes and also started teaching yoga on its own.
In 2008 I was hired by the State of Maine for a new employee wellness program called ME First.
The program was based on Jon Kabat Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and included Yoga, body scan meditation and walking meditation as well as the attitudinal foundations of mindfulness. I found that these practices really spoke to me and were vey similar and complementary to my martial arts training.
This lead me to seek out my first yoga certification and also a masters degree in psychology with a concentration in sports psychology which I completed in 2012.
